GENERIACIJA Z: NOVI IZAZOVI POUČAVANJA I STUDIRANJA NA FILOLOŠKIM STUDIJIMA
Prva obavijest
Istovremeno, pojava generativne UI i automatiziranih alata u jeziku i prevođenju mijenja kurikulum i etičke okvire rada.

The Croatian Association of University Lectors announces the holding of the 5th scientific and professional conference that will be held hybridly, i.e. live and remotely, at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb on February 18 and 19, 2027.
GENERATION Z: NEW CHALLENGES IN TEACHING AND STUDYING IN PHILOLOGICAL STUDIES
First call
Information import has replaced systematic learning: fragmented online content does not build structured knowledge, and school curricula and media increasingly emphasize broad humanistic literacy as they focus on specialized skills and rapid employability. All this shortens the time for broad education and gives the impression that students are largely unprepared for study.
Working with Generation Z students in philology studies brings a number of specific challenges that condition the way of teaching and assessment, the design of courses and the attitude towards (scientific) work. The first thing that is noticed is the shortened attention span and preference for short, visual and interactive content, as well as the increasing differences in prior knowledge among new students.
The weak general culture among Generation Z students often manifests itself as a limited knowledge of general cultural references that facilitate the understanding of the text and context, and are necessary for in-depth reading, critical thinking and translation.
At the same time, the emergence of generative AI and automated tools in language and translation is changing the curriculum and ethical frameworks of work. Through the superficial use of tools, information often becomes easily and quickly accessible and is copied without checking the sources. Students expect to learn how to use these tools, but at the same time they do not understand what it means to “learn the ropes” in the field of philology.
In addition, it is important to develop competencies that will distinguish future philologists from machines, which means it is important to encourage creativity, contextual understanding and interdisciplinary thinking. These are the qualities that distinguish excellent philologists, but students of Generation Z are often not aware of it.
Ultimately, it seems that the greatest challenge remains motivation for in-depth reading and research. A generational preference for quickly accessible content that does not require in-depth study may reduce the willingness to engage in long-term, analytical work that is often necessary in the philological discipline. Therefore, methods that encourage sustained attention and scholarly interest should be applied, but in the era of new technologies, the question arises whether the old, already widely tested approaches are still the most effective to achieve this.
Languages of the meeting: Croatian and English
Applications need to contain the title of the talk, an abstract (250-300 words) and keywords (up to five) in both languages. In order to preserve anonymity in the review process, please do not include the author's name and surname in the abstract. Regardless of whether the author presents in Croatian or English, the title of the talk, keywords and summary should be attached in both languages (Croatian and English). If the language of the presentation is neither Croatian nor English, the authors can add a third summary in the language that is the subject of the talk if they wish.
The abstract should clearly state the research problem that will be presented, the theoretical framework and the methodology used, as well as the assumed scientific and professional contribution.
Please send applications to the email address of the HDSL secretary: Ova e-mail adresa je zaštićena od spambota. Potrebno je omogućiti JavaScript da je vidite., with the subject of the message: HDSL – conference application.
The deadline for submitting presentations is October 15, 2026, and notifications of abstract acceptance will be sent by December 1, 2026.
The abstract booklet will be available in electronic format.
